Camp Century Arctic Tunnel Base Black Program
Camp Century mattered because it was both more ordinary and more extraordinary than legend usually remembers. On the surface, it was a real U.S. Army engineering and research base carved into the Greenland ice sheet to test whether humans, machines, utilities, and a portable reactor could sustain life inside snow tunnels. Beneath that public face, it also served as the feasibility platform for Project Iceworm, the far larger and more secret idea of hiding a mobile missile network under the ice. That combination made Camp Century one of the most revealing Cold War black programs: an experimental city under the ice that failed as a permanent military model but succeeded as a scientific milestone and as proof of just how far Arctic militarization was once imagined to go.
