JUMPSEAT was one of the Cold War’s quietest orbital listeners. While CORONA and GAMBIT became the famous eyes in space, JUMPSEAT became something different: a high-orbit ear placed where low Earth orbit satellites could not linger long enough. Launched from 1971 to 1987 under mission numbers 7701 through 7708, developed by the Air Force side of the NRO under Project EARPOP, and operated until 2006, JUMPSEAT collected electronic emissions, communications intelligence, and foreign instrumentation intelligence from a highly elliptical orbit. Its public declassification was limited, but the basic outline is now clear: JUMPSEAT was not a UFO platform or an exotic space weapon. Project DORIAN was the secret center of the Manned Orbiting Laboratory. Publicly, MOL was sold as an Air Force space station for military experiments and the study of human usefulness in orbit. Privately, DORIAN was the reconnaissance mission: a compartmented NRO effort to put astronauts beside a giant KH-10 optical system and let them choose, track, and photograph Soviet targets from a polar orbit. The program had the right mythic ingredients: a public cover, a hidden camera, a modified Gemini spacecraft, a heat-shield hatch, Vandenberg launch infrastructure, Kodak optics, BYEMAN security, and a mission so expensive and technically demanding that it died before the first crew ever flew. Project OXCART was one of the cleanest examples of a real Cold War black project: a CIA-funded, Lockheed Skunk Works aircraft built to fly above 90,000 feet at more than Mach 3, survive Soviet air-defense advances, reduce radar detectability, and return timely strategic imagery. The A-12 was born from the need to replace the U-2, tested in secrecy at Groom Lake / Area 51, pushed titanium, fuel, engine, navigation, camera, electronic countermeasure, life-support, and thermal-management technology to the edge, and finally flew operational BLACK SHIELD missions over East Asia before being retired in favor of the SR-71 and satellite reconnaissance.
