Project DORIAN was the secret center of the Manned Orbiting Laboratory. Publicly, MOL was sold as an Air Force space station for military experiments and the study of human usefulness in orbit. Privately, DORIAN was the reconnaissance mission: a compartmented NRO effort to put astronauts beside a giant KH-10 optical system and let them choose, track, and photograph Soviet targets from a polar orbit. Blue Gemini mattered because it was the Air Force's most practical early answer to a problem that kept returning in Cold War space policy: how do you gain real military experience in orbit without waiting for a larger, more expensive manned system to mature? By borrowing Gemini, Titan II, and Agena hardware, Blue Gemini proposed a short, incremental path into military orbital operations. That made it less dramatic than Dyna-Soar, but in some ways more important.
