Project Nuclear Furnace Reactor Test Program

The Nuclear Furnace was not a moonbase reactor, an orbital power station, or a secret nuclear weapon. It was something more precise and historically important: the final nuclear thermal propulsion reactor testbed of the Rover / NERVA era. Known as NF-1, it was built to test advanced fuel elements inside a reusable reactor fixture, expose them to high-temperature hydrogen, reduce the cost and turnaround time of nuclear rocket fuel qualification, and demonstrate cleaner ground-test handling through an effluent cleanup system. In summer 1972, NF-1 operated at roughly 44 megawatts and produced some of the longest full-power fuel exposure data in the U.S. nuclear rocket program. Then the larger Rover / NERVA line was cancelled before any nuclear rocket ever flew.

Project Peewee Compact Nuclear Engine Program

Project Peewee, more often spelled Pewee in technical literature, was not a flown atomic spaceship and not a separate secret Mars vehicle. It was one of the most important compact nuclear thermal rocket reactor testbeds inside the late Project Rover / NERVA world. After the massive Phoebus reactors proved raw power, Pewee pushed the opposite question: could a smaller reactor operate at very high power density and extreme hydrogen exhaust temperature while improving fuel performance enough for practical nuclear rocket engines? In November and December 1968, the Pewee testbed reactor was operated at roughly 500 megawatts for about 40 minutes at Nevada's Test Cell C, with performance close to pre-run predictions. Its legacy lived on in the Nuclear Furnace fuel-test program and in later NASA Mars mission studies that described Pewee-class 25 klbf nuclear thermal engines as compact, high-performing candidates for crewed deep-space transfer stages.

Project Phoebus was the high-power branch of the United States nuclear thermal rocket effort. It was not a flown spacecraft, not a secret alien engine, and not a nuclear bomb propulsion system like Project Orion. Project PLUTO Nuclear Ramjet Missile Program

Project PLUTO was one of the Cold War's most extreme verified weapons programs: a nuclear ramjet intended to power the Supersonic Low Altitude Missile, or SLAM. The idea was brutal in its simplicity. Air would enter a fast-moving missile, pass through an unshielded nuclear reactor, expand violently from heat, and provide thrust without ordinary chemical fuel. Lawrence Radiation Laboratory built and tested the Tory II-A and Tory II-C reactors at the Nevada Test Site, proving that the engine concept could work on the ground. But the missile itself never flew. ICBMs advanced, public tolerance for atmospheric radioactive contamination collapsed, test-flight plans looked politically impossible, and the concept became less a deployable weapon than a warning about what Cold War deterrence almost normalized.

Project RIFT Reactor-In-Flight-Test Program

Project RIFT was the moment when the nuclear rocket program nearly left Jackass Flats and entered the launch range. The Reactor-In-Flight-Test project was initiated in 1962 to develop a nuclear stage and Saturn-class vehicle capable of demonstrating NERVA-style nuclear thermal propulsion in space. It was not a rumor about alien engines or secret deep-space reactors. It was a real NASA / AEC planning track: Marshall Space Flight Center would develop and integrate the vehicle, Lockheed would work the nuclear S-N stage, Aerojet and Westinghouse would develop the NERVA engine and reactor, and Cape Canaveral / Merritt Island launch operations would support ballistic flight tests. RIFT was cancelled before launch, leaving the nuclear-rocket dream grounded, but the surviving plans show how close the United States came to flying a live reactor as an upper stage.
