Art Nouveau Mermaids

Art Nouveau mermaids are not a separate species of folklore, but a major art-historical expression of the mermaid image. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the movement’s whiplash curves, marine ornament, symbolic femininity, and decorative ambition made mermaids, sirens, and water-women unusually natural subjects across jewelry, stained glass, posters, and luxury design.
