Federal agent provocation theories, often grouped under the slang term 'fedsurrection,' are modern conspiracy claims alleging that federal agents or informants secretly stirred up or steered events such as Jan. 6, militia plots, or anti-government actions in order to discredit movements, justify prosecutions, or expand state power. In reality, informants and undercover techniques are real law-enforcement tools, but the strongest claims that federal agents orchestrated these events generally go far beyond the available evidence.
