Project SAINT was one of the first serious American attempts to imagine a spacecraft whose target was another spacecraft. Born from early Cold War fears of Soviet reconnaissance satellites, orbital nuclear weapons, and unknown objects in space, SAINT began as a satellite-interceptor idea and matured into a satellite-inspector program that would rendezvous with a suspicious object, examine it, transmit data to Earth, and potentially support neutralization concepts. The public record does not show an operational SAINT fleet stalking Soviet spacecraft. It does show a real Air Force / ARPA / Space Systems Division program: development planning in 1960, RCA final-stage work, Atlas and Agena booster contracts, four-shot feasibility demonstrations, Gemini compatibility studies, repeated funding fights, and a transition of practical anti-satellite urgency toward Nike Zeus and Program 437.
