Project ISINGLASS Hypersonic Reconnaissance Black Project

Project ISINGLASS mattered because it was the moment the CIA looked beyond the A-12 and SR-71 regime and asked whether a piloted reconnaissance vehicle could survive by becoming almost orbital. The public record points to a serious but unbuilt concept: a rocket-powered boost-glide vehicle, launched from a B-52 near the edge of Soviet territory, entering denied airspace at roughly Mach 21 and around 200,000 feet, then exiting at high hypersonic speed before recovering at U.S.-controlled bases. That is the verified core. The mythology is that ISINGLASS was a flown black-world spaceplane, a hidden ancestor of later hypersonic craft, or a program whose real performance remains buried. The evidence supports the design study, the reconnaissance logic, the CIA/NRO sponsorship trail, the cost problem, and the termination. It does not prove an operational fleet.
