Mermaids in Renaissance Painting

Mermaids in Renaissance painting rarely appear as the later, fully standardized fairy-tale sea maiden. Instead, Renaissance painters and designers often translated mermaid-related meanings through classical marine women, sea nymphs, siren hybrids, and sea-born goddesses. The result is a visual field in which the mermaid survives, but usually under antique names and in more learned forms.
