JUMPSEAT was one of the Cold War’s quietest orbital listeners. While CORONA and GAMBIT became the famous eyes in space, JUMPSEAT became something different: a high-orbit ear placed where low Earth orbit satellites could not linger long enough. Launched from 1971 to 1987 under mission numbers 7701 through 7708, developed by the Air Force side of the NRO under Project EARPOP, and operated until 2006, JUMPSEAT collected electronic emissions, communications intelligence, and foreign instrumentation intelligence from a highly elliptical orbit.
