Project Archangel A-12 Black Aircraft Design Program

Project Archangel was the design descent that turned the CIA's fear of losing the U-2 into the A-12 OXCART. It was not an alien craft program. It was the Lockheed Skunk Works iteration chain, reviewed through Project GUSTO, challenged by Convair's KINGFISH, tested through radar-signature trials, and pushed into the OXCART black program after the CIA decided that speed, altitude, titanium, operational trust, and contractor discipline outweighed a cleaner paper signature.
