Project HEXAGON Big Bird Spy Satellite Program
Project HEXAGON, better known as KH-9 Big Bird, was not a loose black-satellite rumor. It was one of the largest and most important film-return reconnaissance systems the United States ever flew. Where GAMBIT stared hard at selected targets, HEXAGON searched whole regions. It carried twin panoramic cameras, sometimes a separate mapping camera, miles of film, and four large return vehicles that dropped exposed intelligence back through the atmosphere for aircraft recovery near Hawaii. Its public record now spans NRO histories, CIA recovery files, USGS declassified imagery, museum hardware, and a failed final 1986 launch. The real story is stronger than the myth: an analog orbital machine so large, useful, and secret that it became a backbone of Cold War seeing.
