Dyna-Soar X-20 Military Spaceplane Program

Dyna-Soar mattered because it was the moment American military space ambition first took a true winged form. It was not built as a simple capsule or a one-shot stunt machine. It was imagined as a reusable piloted boost-glider that could rise on a missile, move through orbit or near-orbit, return under aerodynamic control, and land like an aircraft on a real runway. That made it more than an early space project. It was the first great lost military spaceplane — the black-program ancestor that never flew, yet still seems to cast a shadow forward across the Shuttle, lifting bodies, hypersonic gliders, and later secret-spaceplane mythology.
