Project CHALET SIGINT Satellite Black Program
Project CHALET matters because it sits at the seam between the first American high-orbit communications-intelligence satellites and the later giant-dish SIGINT systems that defined the mature Cold War space-listening architecture. It was not a paranormal platform, an alien-monitoring satellite, or a fictional label. In the strongest open-source reconstruction, CHALET was the initial codename for a successor to CANYON: a high-altitude signals-intelligence satellite system launched from Cape Canaveral in June 1978, later renamed or folded into the VORTEX line after the CHALET name surfaced publicly. The public evidence is strong enough to treat CHALET as a real black SIGINT program, but not strong enough to pretend that its complete payload design, exact target list, tasking rules, collection products, and operational ground chain are fully declassified.
