Project DISCOVERER CORONA Cover Story Program
Project DISCOVERER was the name the public was allowed to see. Behind it was CORONA: the classified CIA and Air Force photo-reconnaissance system built to photograph denied Soviet and Chinese territory from orbit and return exposed film to Earth in recoverable capsules. The cover was not pure fiction. Discoverer launches really did test orbit, stabilization, reentry, recovery, tracking, biomedical payloads, and space hardware. But the larger reason for the program was concealed. The scientific-satellite story made it possible to launch camera-carrying spacecraft from Vandenberg, discuss reentry capsules in public, and explain repeated failures without revealing that the United States was trying to replace dangerous U-2 overflights with satellites that could photograph the Soviet missile force from above. Discoverer was the mask. CORONA was the eye.
